A reflection on the translation of sex-related language in audio-visual texts: the Spanish version of J.K. Rowling’sThe Casual Vacancy

2018

Studies on the way sex-related language has been approached in audio-visual translation are still rather limited. This article documents the range of solutions given in Spanish to the sex-related l...

Sex-related differences and age of peak performance in breaststroke versus freestyle swimming

2013

Abstract Background Sex-related differences in performance and in age of peak performance have been reported for freestyle swimming. However, little is known about the sex-related differences in other swimming styles. The aim of the present study was to compare performance and age of peak performance for elite men and women swimmers in breaststroke versus freestyle. Methods Race results were analyzed for swimmers at national ranked in the Swiss high score list (during 2006 through 2010) and for international swimmers who qualified for the finals of the FINA World Swimming Championships (during 2003 through 2011). Results The sex-related difference in swimming speed was significantly greater…

''Sex-related Trends In Participation and Performance In the 'swiss Bike Masters' From 1994-2012''

2013

Gloor, Roman Urs | Knechtle, Beat | Knechtle, Patrizia | Ruest, Christoph Alexander | Haupt, Samuel | Rosemann, Thomas | Lepers, Romuald; International audience; ''General participation in contests such as ultra-marathons and ultra-triathlons has increased considerably over the past 30 years, especially among women. This study investigated performance trends in the Swiss Bike Masters, one of the first and most prestigious mountain bike, ultra-endurance races in its class, with comparisons of participation and performance trends to similar races. The development of performance in the Swiss Bike Masters held between 1994 and 2012 was investigated by analysing the number of finishers, their ag…

Sex-related effects in the superhydrophobic properties of damselfly wings in young and old Calopteryx splendens.

2013

Numerous sex-related morphological adaptations are connected to reproductive behavior in animals. For example, females of some insect species can submerge during oviposition, which may lead to sex-related adaptations in the hydrophobicity (water-repellency) due to specialization of certain morphological structures. On the other hand, ageing can cause changes in hydrophobicity of the surface, because the morphological structures can wear with age. Here, we investigated sex-and age-related differences in wing hydrophobicity and in morphology (spine density, wax cover characteristics, size of females' pseudopterostigma) potentially related to hydrophobicity of Calopteryx splendens damselflies.…

Sex-related Differences in Disposition and Response to Phenprocoumon in Rats

1988

Abstract The pharmacokinetics and the pharmacological response to phenprocoumon have been studied in female and male inbred Lewis-Wistar rats. A significantly lower clearance was found in female than in male rats (7.9 ± 1.4 vs 24.5 ± 2.5 mL h−1 kg−1, respectively; t = 15.09, P < 0.001) as well as a lower apparent volume of distribution (288 ± 46 vs 617 ± 105 mL kg−1; t = 7.58, P < 0.001) and a longer half-life (25.5 ± 3.4 vs 17.5 ± 1.8 h; t = 5.16, P < 0.001). The binding of phenprocoumon was higher in female than in male rats (fu: 0.0096 ± 0.0008 vs 0.0124 ± 0.0007, respectively; t = 6.66, P < 0.001). The total (C) as well as the unbound concentration (Cu) neede…

Sex-Related Clinical Characteristics and Outcomes of Patients Undergoing Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair for Secondary Mitral Regurgitation.

2021

OBJECTIVES The authors sought to assess sex-based differences in characteristics and outcomes of patients undergoing transcatheter edge-to-edge mitral valve repair (TMVR) for secondary mitral regurgitation (SMR). BACKGROUND Subgroup analysis from the COAPT (Cardiovascular Outcomes Assessment of the MitraClip Percutaneous Therapy for HeartFailure Patients with Functional Mitral Regurgitation) trial indicated potential sex-related differences in outcomes after TMVR. The impact of sex on results after TMVR in a real-world setting is unknown. METHODS The authors assessed clinical outcomes and echocardiographic parameters in women and men undergoing TMVR for SMR between 2008 and 2018 who were …

P27-S Sex differences and cortical excitability in healthy adolescents

2019

Background Sex is known to influence brain development. However, sex differences in cortical excitability and their relationship to motor functions is unclear. Aim We examined the sex related differences in the degree of handedness, left and right motor cortex excitability and manual dexterity. Methods 28 healthy adolescents (age 16–19 years,19 girls) were studied. The degree of right-handedness was determined by the Waterloo Handedness Questionnaire. Motor threshold (MT) of the abductor pollicis brevis was measured on both hemispheres. Box and block test (BBT) was used for manual dexterity. Independent samples t-test was used in statistical analysis. Results There were no differences betwe…

Sex-related differences in mortality following an admission for acute heart failure across left ventricular ejection fraction spectrum

2021

Abstract Background Prognosis in heart failure (HF) may differ between women and men. However, data is conflicting and sex-related differences in prognosis may be determined by left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) status. We sought to evaluate the prognostic differences between women and men with HF following an admission for acute HF (AHF). Methods We included 4,812 patients consecutively admitted for AHF in a multicenter registry from 3 hospitals in Valencia (Spain). Study endpoints were all-cause, cardiovascular (CV), and HF-related mortality at 6-months follow-up. Multivariable Cox regression models were fitted to investigate sex-related differences across LVEF status. Results 2,24…
